As I have been training for my half-marathon, I have been doing some very interesting runs. But none of them will compare to my run this morning.
I was facing an 8 mile run. After having to take a week and a half off, I really was concerned I could make this run, but I was going to try.
As I set out dodging ice and cars, I was feeling pretty good. My tummy was going a little numb from the cold, but all in all I was feeling good. I did my first 4.25 mile loop, tacked on an extra quarter mile and decided I would just doing some loops by the elementary school by our house in order to avoid the big hill.
One problem!
Our neighbors have two very dangerous dogs who will attack. And they tried to get me this morning.
Normally, I would have been scared out of my mind. I was scared, yes, but I was grateful for a little run I did with my sister in laws for some bonding over Thanksgiving. It was on this run that I first encountered these dogs and my sister in law, Kalyn, who is a mommy runner herself, told me what to do.
So I stomped. I screamed. I yelled. Finally, they backed down, otherwise I would have had to pull out some rocks to throw at them.
Needless to say, I didn’t do my loops around the school. I ended up doing the big loop again and almost didn’t make it home. But after some walking and talking to the hubby on the phone, I made it home.
Now, I am trying to decided what to do about those attack dogs…

From personal experience I can say that the tips you share here work! I’ve passed those same dogs many times myself! Look and sound as big and mean as you can and they’ll usually back off.

Really? You’ve seen the dog? Kalyn and I have discussed calling animal control. Thanks for the encouragement. And maybe sometime we can run together
I am deathly afraid of dogs! As a young child, I was chased by a dog walking home from school. I will definitely keep those tips in mind!
We are dog lovers and yet still, when I see a large strange dog when we are out walking, I tense up. Thanks for the tips. Found you through Bloggy Moms.

Yikes!!! That would have been scary! Before you call animal control, you should try talking to the owners of the dogs. Why are vicious dogs doing roaming around the neighborhood anyway? Do you not have a leash law where you live? Just explain to the (obviously inconsiderate) owners that you run and you don’t appreciate being terrorized by their dogs. Tell them you don’t want to have to call animal control, but if they continue to be out loose like that you will have to. Stay safe!

Good call LeeAnn. After talking to my cousins who live by and have been terrorized by the same dogs, I think I will just change my route. I just don’t think it is worth it to even mess with it all, as sad as that is.
